Der Ring des Nibelungen
Seen in Zaryadye Hall during March 11, March 23, March 24, and April 17. At 15 hours, this is the longest opera cycle, I’ve ever heard. Great music. The ride of Valkyries was awesome to hear live. Funny that most of the dialogue during the piece was about horses. Never would have guessed. Favorite performance is Siegfried by Mihail Vekua. Valery Gergiev conducted and wasn’t that just ironic for the Götterdämmerung performance?...
Khovanshchina
Some operas can take place anywhere, but this one is all about Moscow. As despondent as his other works (Russian history, hey!). I liked his Boris Godunov better.
Lohengrin
Lohengrin is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. It is part of the Knight of the Swan legend. The opera has inspired other works of art. King Ludwig II of Bavaria named his castle Neuschwanstein Castle after the Swan Knight....
Katerina Izmailova
Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is an opera in four acts and nine scenes by Dmitri Shostakovich, his Opus 29. The libretto, jointly written by Alexander Preys and the composer, is based on the novella Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Nikolai Leskov. Randomly went to Katerina Izmailova. Was not disappointed. Dmitri Shostakovich is not my favorite composer - he sometimes adds too much extravaganza, but in here the music added great nuances to lyrics....
